Rotary and TAFE Links

 


TAFE NSW is Australia's largest vocational education and training institution and offers several hundred courses to thousands of local and international students annually. There are 10 TAFE campuses within Rotary District 9680.

Rotary and TAFE Links is a new Vocational Service program in 2007 - 2008. It builds on an initiative of the Rotary Club of Waitara in which a relationship was formed between the Club and TAFE NSW - Northern Sydney Institute Hornsby College.

Whilst there are Rotary Clubs in District 9680 with established TAFE links this new Vocational Service program aims at developing a continuing, working relationship between Rotary Clubs and TAFE staff and students. The linkage will be of mutual benefit as both groups will be encouraged to share knowledge and skills and foster and support opportunities to recognise achievement in a variety of vocations.

Following are some suggestions / strategies:
  • Vocational visits to local TAFE colleges.
  • Recognition of TAFE students through Pride of Workmanship Awards, Outstanding Student Awards, Apprentice & Trainee Awards (both at Club and district level).
  • Recognition of TAFE staff by nominating them for professional development opportunities through Rotary programs such as Group Study Exchange (25 - 40 years) and the Ambassadorial Scholar Program and Pride of Workmanship Awards.
  • Rotary Clubs to work with TAFE on joint community projects eg. involving skills such as landscaping, building, decorating.
  • Exchange of Guest Speakers between Clubs and TAFE.
  • Rotary Clubs without websites to invite TAFE IT students to set up Club websites as part of their coursework.
  • Support TAFE teams entering the WorldSkills trade competitions by using Rotary contacts and networks for industry sponsorships, encouraging participating students by sending hero grams etc.
  • Invite suitable 18 - 26 year olds to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) to develop leadership skills.
  • Work with the District Youth Adviser to investigate involving TAFE students in Rotaract Clubs (existing and new on-campus).
  • Rotary Clubs to facilitate links of local TAFE colleges with community groups such as the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Rotary Clubs to publicise the achievements of TAFE staff and students as they become involved in Rotary programs.
